| CURRENT INFORMATION ABOUT BRINGING TOURIST'S
VEHICLES INTO THE MEXICAN STATES OF BAJA CALIFORNIA AND BAJA CALIFORNIA
SUR
Due to the recent excess of misinformation circulating throughout the news media in the U.S. which has caused considerable confusion among tourists and potential travelers to Mexico we would like to specify here the difference according to Mexican law regarding bringing your vehicle into the areas of Mexico known as the border zones and the area known as the interior of Mexico. 1 These laws do not apply to vehicles belonging to tourists who are traveling to the border zones. The border zones consist of a 20Km strip along the entire U.S. - Mexican International border and the Mexican states of Baja California both North and South, as well as the municipality of Cananea in Sonora as specified by Federal Mandate and Article 136 of the Customs Laws. In these areas the vehicles are exempt from the deposit but must be used at all times only by a resident of a foreign country who has obtained the necessary tourist Visa or Resident Visa as specified in Article 106-IV-a) of the Customs Laws.
2. In order to take your vehicle into the interior of the country (not the border zones) the vehicle must be temporarily imported, the process will cost you $16.90 USD. In addition you must gaurantee that you will leave the country with your vehicle. This is done by using a credit card to pay for this fee. This requirement was established a number of years ago and was recently modified in the Miscelaneous Resolutions of Exterior to change the amount of the deposit to the current amount of $400.00. This information is based on articles 106 and 139 of the Customs Laws. Camara Nacional De Comercio, Servicios y Turismo Delegacion Mulege |
